This website was created in 1998 by two mothers who have had breast reduction surgery themselves, Diana West, IBCLC, and Carol Maranta. The site is an outgrowth of the BFAR email lists that operated from 1996-2005 (which were replaced by forums, which in turn were replaced by the Facebook BFAR Group) and the BFAR Book that was published in 2001. Diana is now an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and maintains the main website and its content.
The purpose of the BFAR website is to provide information and support to mothers who wish to breastfeed after any type of breast surgery and to provide information to health care providers about the feasibility and protocols of breastfeeding after breast surgeries. In addition to its outreach to mothers who are breastfeeding after breast or nipple surgeries through this website and the BFAR Facebook group, Diana West presents information about breastfeeding at professional and parenting conferences and publishes information about breastfeeding in other books, professional journals, and parenting magazines. You can learn more about her work on her website.
The information on this site is not intended to be medical advice. Mothers are urged to consult their health care professionals when health care decisions must be made.
